Maggie Cheung asks Chinese fan if she’s Singaporean because she spoke good English

Most Singaporeans would consider themselves effectively bilingual and that’s something we take pride in.
Who knew ’90s screen goddess Maggie Cheung, who faded out of showbiz in 2004, would think of us the same way too?
Recently, a Chinese netizen named Sandro took to her socials to share that the elusive 59-year-old star had visited the boutique she was working at in London.
“Maggie Cheung came to my store to return clothes and bought a few more pieces. I served her and chatted with her,” said Sandro.
“She asked me if she looked good in one of the leather jackets. I told her she looked great and the jacket really suits her. She then praised me for knowing all the right things to say to make her happy,” she added.
Sandro said Maggie did not put on airs at all and was very approachable. Their interaction felt like they already knew each other.
Maggie also thought that she was Singaporean.
“She asked if I was from Singapore. I said: ‘No, I’m from Guangdong’, and she praised me for speaking really good English,” recounted the fan.
Sandro was so moved by her encounter with Maggie, she broke down in tears.
“[Maggie] told me not to cry because it made her want to cry too. She asked me to stay healthy and that my parents must be proud to have a child like me,” said Sandro.
At the end, Maggie gave Sandro a hug, and asked if she would be working at the store for a long time.
“I said: ‘Probably’, and she told me I have to because she would return for me,” said Sandro, who added that she managed to convince Maggie to buy a 10,000 yuan (S$1.8K) jacket from their shop.
“She told me I was the one who made her buy it,” said Sandro.
